Melatonin

It is a hormone that is commonly used for improving sleep quality. Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences conducted a research study on 50 people with insomnia. The results showed that taking melatonin two hours before bed helped patients fall asleep faster with enhanced overall sleep quality.

The study concluded that this supplement can be helpful for patients who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

Melatonin is a hormone that is produced in the human brain. Its production is controlled by internal cellular and external environmental factors. It plays an important role in regulating sleep cycles, at night and during the early hours of the morning, when the body's production and release of it decreases. Some of its functions include:
It is a stimulant hormone that reinstates sleep deeply in the late night hours by reducing palpitations. It also helps intense dreams to happen after being awake for approximately 2 hours. During REM sleep, it is produced most abundantly. It also tends to increase the amount of deep sleep and dreaming you do.

It is produced by the pineal gland, which is a part of the brain that produces it at night. The pineal gland secretes more melatonin during night time and early hours of morning. This hormone gets into the blood stream through the bloodstreams that connect to it. The blood then carries it to different parts of the body, where organs use it for regulating their functions.

Melatonin supplements can be used to help reduce difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, as well as insomnia in general for patients with sleep disorder issues or on medications that cause insomnia as a side effect.
